Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Technology provides a unique and innovative technology path for 4-H youth in their service projects in the community that integrate critical thinking, career exploration, and civic involvement.  The goal of this program is to foster and support the integration of geographic information system (GIS) applications in U.S. 4-H clubs.

ESRI has created the 2009 GIS Grant Program for U.S. 4-H in cooperation with National 4-H Headquarters within the Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service (CSREES)/U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to support the 4-H SET mission through geospatial outreach, education, and community involvement efforts.

ESRI Getting Started with GIS and GPS Grant includes: Thinking Spatially Using GIS book and lessons with ArcExplorer Java Edition for Education software, Making Community Connections Book, Zeroing In Book and Fun with GPS book.  This grant is intended for use by leaders or extension professionals who are not already familiar with GIS technology and want to begin introducing spatial literacy to youth.  Grant awardees are expected to participate in a GIS Day event in their community, and submit 3 maps to the 4-H Map Gallery.   This grant does NOT include GPS units.

ESRI Introduction to GIS for 4-H Grant includes:
ESRI’s ArcGIS ArcView 9.3, ArcGIS Spatial Analyst, and ArcPad Youth Club licenses (up to 25 seats), ESRI Virtual Campus Courses, and curriculum.  This grant is intended for 4-H groups who have technology experience, have met GIS professionals in their community, and have a youth driven service learning project in mind that will utilize GIS technology. Introductory Grant awardees are expected to participate in a GIS Day event in their community, complete a service learning project in the community utilizing GIS technology, and complete an ESRI Community Atlas Project (www.esri.com/communityatlas).  This grant does not include GPS units.

ESRI Intermediate GIS for 4-H Grant includes:
ESRI’s ArcGIS ArcView 9.3, ArcGIS 3D Analyst, additional extensions, and ArcPad Youth Club licenses (up to 25 seats), ESRI Virtual Campus Courses, and ESRI curriculum.  For Service learning projects involving tree and plant health, this grant also includes an option for obtaining CITYGreen Software by American Forests.  Intermediate grant applicants must have successfully participated and fulfilled the requirements of an Introductory GIS grant. Intermediate Grant awardees are expected to participate in a GIS Day event in their community, complete a service learning project in the community utilizing GIS technology, and complete an ESRI Community Atlas Project (www.esri.com/communityatlas. This grant does not include GPS units.

 

4-H GIS Resources

    • To join the 4-H GIS GPS List serv to receive announcements about monthly conference calls, webinars, and training opportunities, please send an email to Trudy Dunham and ask to be added to the list. dunha003@umn.edu
       

    • The 4-H Alert, Evacuate, and Shelter lessons plans and other resource materials are available at: www.crn4h.org    See how 4-H clubs in 13 states in Southeast US have created evacuation and shelter maps to support their community’s emergency preparedness plans.
       

    • Meet the GIS professionals in your area – USDA NRCS, USDA FSA, Local government planning departments in your area are good places to begin.
       

    • Attend a regional GIS user conference to learn more about how GIS is used in your region.  Find the conferences at www.esri.com/usergroup or do a web search on “GIS” and your county or state name. 
       

    • GIS Corps has a volunteer program with a limited number of GIS professionals who are willing to mentor and offer support to 4-H GIS club efforts (near or far). www.giscorps.org
       

    • American Forests - American Forests works to protect, restore and enhance the natural capital of trees and forests, and provides CITYGreen software (an ArcGIS extension) for qualified Intermediate GIS Grant applicants.  More information on CITYGreen may be found at www.americanforests.org
